Great Speed Reading Exercises For Anyone
The basic urge to learn speed reading is to save time. The more we save time the more we can allocate it to other important things. It remains a fact that irrespective of how quickly we may learn to do things, it is seldom that it is done quickly enough.
The first thing we need to try during speed reading is to concentrate on reading the words mentally from back to front. While we are at it, we should imagine the words in terms of the constituent letters till our concentration gets distracted. This is the best way to train oneself towards speed reading.
Breathing can also used to improve the reading rate. Taking deep breaths instead of short ones contributes to drastic improvement in concentration levels.
Metronome reading is another method used in speed reading exercises. Speed reading software tends to analyze by synchronizing the mental processing with the process of reading. Another method that is widely practiced is by drawing two vertical lines on the text and moving our eyes over it in a "Z" pattern very fast. Since our mind is unable to read each and every word, it fills in the gap. This helps in training and engaging the mind for greater comprehension. Thus the mind is trained to skip a lot of words while reading and keeping the actual meaning same. We could also cut up the whole text into perpendicular strips and place it in front and then make gaps of one-inch between those strips and try to read them quickly. The more the speed of our reading is, the more our mind is processing and the better we can understand or comprehend. Another method of becoming an expert in speed reading is to read the first sentence of each paragraph thoroughly as often the first sentence gives us an idea of the whole material that is contained inside the paragraph. However it is not convenient to be used in case of long and elaborate paragraphs where there is too much detailing to actually get any idea from the first sentence. We need not read each and every word from the text to understand the meaning of the text. We can simply look out for some key words that are capable of giving us a vivid picture of the entire content of the text. We also need to develop a wider span than normally our eye can cover. This will help us to read more than one word at one glance and thereby save our precious time as well. If we underline or highlight a document while reading, it will help us to emphasize on the important lines of the text which will ultimately help us in clear understanding of the text and also in memorizing it. All in all, speed reading can be learnt through simple exercises which should be performed daily and diligently.
