Speed Reading And Study Skills
Learning speed reading is not going to benefit each and every student equally. A student who faces problems in understanding what he is reading cannot benefit much from reading faster. He should rather revise his techniques of deriving the gist from the given text. A student whose vocabulary is poor needs to improve his word knowledge so as to avoid lingering on some unknown words. This will surely save his valuable time.
However, the case is different with the college students because their comprehension and vocabulary skills are already well developed so they don't face a problem in reading the college texts. However speed reading tips can surely help them in covering the whole syllabus in a very short time.
Firstly, question arises about the word "reading" and "speed". Many people think that reading is done by going through each and every word in the text while for others reading means hitting on some of the key words to have a proper understanding of the given text. Speed of reading and understanding the text is also different for different people. If a person is familiar with a given text then he can surely read it faster than his counterpart who is unfamiliar with the given subject.
Secondly, a reader's capability to increase his speed of reading depends upon many other conditions like intelligence, intellect, observation, determination, motivation, concentration, and previous reading experience. Thus some students can finish their chapters faster than other fellow students. Thirdly, students, especially those going to colleges can have different reading speeds. Speeds vary according to the reading material and the reader's previous knowledge about that material. The speed reading is exceptionally difficult in case of great works of English literature. One can speed read such writings and get a grasp of the content but it is not possible for them to experience the atmosphere and emotions the author has tried to create in his writings because that remains hidden in the finer words and phrases which are often overlooked when we try to read the text very fast. It's not at all difficult to master speed reading skills but it requires a lot of hard work, determination, self-confidence and self-discipline and self-enforcement to get accustomed to the habit of speed reading. Adults often can't focus on speed reading because they either don't concentrate on their text properly or they might my lazy to read the article faster. Reading word by word vocally can also reduce their reading speed. All in all speed reading can facilitate a student in finishing his entire syllabus much before the stipulated time provided he puts on some hard work and concentrate in his reading.
