The 10 Essential Speed Reading Tips

Speed Reading Tips

1. Think why you are reading the article. Is it to gather information or do you need to know the details of the article too. If it's the former, you can very well glance through and understand the meaning and get hold of the information. When writing, many articles are full of fillers which increase the word count but are of no vital use. Such portions can be very well ignored when reading.

2. Fix up a time when you start to read. Set up an alarm. That's the deadline you want to meet when you are reading. This will help you keep track of your speed.

3. The alarm might be the only distraction. Nothing else should distract you. When you are reading, you should be only reading. With full concentration. Remember that increasing the speed of your reading must not put a toll on your comprehension.

4. Use a piece of cardboard to keep covering portions you have read. This will help you to prevent your eyes from re reading. Re reading is one of the greatest evils that reduce reading speed.

5. When you are reading keep in mind that you are not pronouncing the words, to yourself or otherwise. Words to you must come naturally as pictures depicting an object. If you find yourself mumbling, put a pencil in your mouth to keep it shut.

6. Always remember that the main reason of reading is to get the information, its not a marathon. If you feel you cannot retain what you are reading, slow down. You can always increase your speed slowly. Comprehension levels are found to increase with time, so don't worry about that at all. When kids learn to read, at first they just spell. They cant even form full fledged words in the subconscious mind. As adults, with speed too, comprehension will increase with the growing comfort levels with the speed in reading.

7. Using your hand or the cardboard as a tracker is a good idea but don't make it a habit because it tends to become an inhibition in the later time.

8. Group words when you are reading. When reading, just read through those groups, not words and with time keep increasing the number of words per group.

9. Remember to keep increasing the amount of text and keep decreasing the amount of time you set in the alarm. This way, it's a faster method of speeding up your reading. With regular practice, it is found that a normal person can read upto 1000 words per minute.

10. Reading is for pleasure. Never compromise on that. Speed reading only helps you to read more and that should always be pleasurable to you.
